Dr.Mehta’s Hospitals is proud to celebrate 14th edition of World Kidney on 2nd March, an annual event focused on Kidney Health across the globe. This year’s theme ”Kidney Health for Everyone Everywhere” reminds us that we need to care about our kidneys  health from an early age as much of the Adult renal disease is actually initiated in childhood.

850 million people worldwide are now estimated to have kidney diseases due to various causes. Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) cause at least 2.4 million deaths per year and is now the 6th fastest growing cause of death.

Many types of kidney diseases can be prevented, delayed and / or kept under control when appropriate prevention measures are in place. Sensitizing every individual on these preventive measures is one of the goals of Department of Nephrology at Dr. Mehta’s Hospitals Chennai.

The Department of Pediatric Nephrology at Dr Mehta’s Hospitalswas developed by Late Dr.Vijayakumar and Prof B.R.Nammalwar. The unit provides 24×7 comprehensive care for kidney disease in children which include Acute CareNephrology, Renal Biopsy, Renal Pathology, Dialysis, Chronic Dialysis for new born and transplantation as well as active renal research. The Department of Pediatric Nephrology at   Dr Mehta’s Hospitals handles around 10,000 patients annually.

Kids Kidney Care (KKC) is the community service wing of Department of Pediatric Nephrology,                 Dr Mehta’s Hospitals. The funds from the trust are used to provide renal and related medical treatment to poor and needy children. KKC gives free medical services to children with chronic kidney disease from the economically limited families and those who are regular to the center but cannot afford payment.  KKC also supports children by reimbursing the cost for hemodialysis and laboratory evaluation.  In addition the Foundation and Department of Pediatric Nephrology, Dr Mehta’s Hospitals serve the community through innovativeout-reach community programs like World Kidney Day celebration. 

Under the tagline “Kidney Health for Everyone Everywhere” street play is organized by Dr.B.R.Nammalwar, (Director- Pediatric Nephrology) and Dr. Sudha (Consultant -Pediatric Nephrology) at Dr.Mehta’s Hospitals.

The street play will happen in different locations in Chennai on 1st and 2ndMarch 2019. This event also showcase that Advanced Health Care facilities are available at Dr Mehta’s Hospitals for early identification and prevention to reduce the risk of developing kidney disease in children.

The Legacy

Dr. Mehta’s Hospitals was founded in 1933 in Sowcarpet by Dr.Anantrai J Mehta, who had a vision to setup an institution that was open to all members of the Indian community that focused on consumer safety, affordability and affection in a Pre-Independence era. Joined by Dr.Savitha Ben Mehta, a Gynecologist trained by leading British and Indian Gynecologists in 1940, they relocated and expanded this to a Multi-specialty Surgical and Birthing unit in 1955 at Chetpet, Chennai. Their children Dilip Mehta, Dr. Usha Shukla and their grand children Sameer Mehta and Dr. Pranav Mehta continue the legacy today.

Dr Mehta’s Hospitals today has over 500 beds across our Multi-Specialty Tertiary Care Unit with over 80 Medical and Surgical specialties and 600 leading clinicians. Our units have helped deliver over a Million babies.  We have been privileged to have served more than 20,000 families across 2 generations and more than 300 families across 3 generations.
